Soil Health, Organic Amendments, and Community Discussion

October 28, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Join us in Northeastern New Mexico!

Regenerative agriculture is meant to build health and well-being while feeding people. At Quivira’s Carbon Ranch Initiative, we use the Healthy Soil Principles and the idea of a circular economy (using waste productively) to move the needle towards regenerative management.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the carbon, water, and energy cycles that intersect in soil, and will learn to evaluate management in light of the Healthy Soil Principles.

In the morning, Dr. Eva Stricker will give participants a tour of field trials of biochar, compost, and bale grazing used to restore degraded berms, and discuss how these activities affected management and outcomes for Sol Ranch. In the afternoon, Patricia Rodriguez, LPCC and Stephen Duran will lead a community discussion relating healthy soils to healthy people, while sharing hopes and challenges of ranching in these times. Their presentation will address the commonalities between taking care of the health of the land & animals with taking care of ourselves and our connections to family and community. We will also focus on networking with other participants to build community resilience to drought, fire, flood, and other stressors around regenerative agriculture.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Eva Stricker. Eva has conducted three years of research and outreach around compost and soil health in New Mexico. Contact carbonranch@quiviracoalition.org with any questions!
