Fall Red Canyon Reserve Land Health and Biochar Workshop

October 22, 2022 @ 8:00 am - October 23, 2022 @ 1:00 pm

It’s time for our Fall Land Health Workshop Weekend at Red Canyon Reserve!

This fall, we have three components to our workshop weekend: a hands-on biochar production session (weather permitting), a tour of the restoration work that Red Canyon volunteers have been conducting for years, and we’ll get our hands dirty giving the Reserve’s wildlife drinker system a cleanup.

Biochar Production: The Quivira Coalition’s Carbon Ranch Initiative has been working on a variety of projects to support more biochar production and use in New Mexico. At Red Canyon, we’ll use the Ring of Fire Biochar Kiln from Wilson Biochar Associates to give participants an opportunity to see the process of making biochar in action! Participants will also go home with a copy of our Biochar in the Southwest technical guide to reference for making their own biochar in the future. We’ll talk through how to prepare to conduct a burn safely, local and state regulations that need to be followed, and the potential benefits of using biochar on your soil

Restoration Tour: Long-time Red Canyon volunteers Steve Carson and Cullen Hallmark will show participants the ways that managed grazing, erosion control structures, and road drainage have been used to improve land and watershed health on the Reserve. These folks have been putting hard work into Red Canyon for 20 years, so there are some pretty impressive changes to witness! Come see how implementing these tools where you live can help you reach your land health goals.

Drinker Maintenance: Drinkers need to be bailed out, cleaned, and refilled. We’ll start in the morning so we can work as the day warms up. Participants will get an overview of the system and learn about the role these drinkers play for wildlife at Red Canyon.

Camping is available to participants on Friday and Saturday nights, and we plan to provide shared breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as a main dish for dinner on Saturday. Cost is free and there is an option to donate to meals for the weekend in the registration form linked below. Please support if you can!
