How did you get interested in agriculture? And what are you hoping to gain from your apprenticeship?May 2026
My interest in agriculture comes from spending time on my grandpa’s farm throughout my childhood and college years, as well as from a lifelong interest in horsemanship. Growing up, I always loved spending my summers in rural Minnesota on our family farm as well as learning to ride horses at summer camp. When I was 17, I was fortunate enough to receive my own horses after a neighbor passed away and began spending more time at the farm working with them. During my first year of college, the pandemic began and I moved to the farm with my grandpa full time while attending online classes. During this time, I fell in love with a lifestyle revolving around working outdoors and with animals and have tried to fit it into my life ever since.
Through my apprenticeship at the Pratt Ranch, I hope to be able to gain the skills and knowledge needed to someday work with animal and land management on my own farm in Minnesota. Additionally, I hope to learn about new methods of animal husbandry and agriculture that emphasize sustainability and more about low stress stockmanship, particularly with cattle and horses. In the future I would love to adopt land management practices that are ecologically minded and prioritize animal well being on my own family farm. Overall, I hope my time at Pratt Ranch can give me the knowledge and resources to promote the holistic health of both the native plants and animals as well as the domesticated ones in my own community.
