What contributes to a meaningful life and how do you hope this apprenticeship will help you explore that?

Nelson Mandela once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” That quote stayed with me because it reflects how I have come to define a meaningful life. To me, meaning is not found in status, comfort, or individual achievement, but in service, stewardship, and the impact we leave on the people and places around us.

A lot of the work I have been drawn to supports that belief. Whether through prairie restoration projects, student mentorship, human wellness research, or community education, I have found the most fulfillment in work that connects people to the land, their food, and each other. A meaningful life is rooted in responsibility: caring for the world around you, contributing to community, and doing your part to create opportunities that extend beyond yourself. The older I get, the more I realize that a meaningful life is less about having everything figured out and more about being willing to show up humbly, work hard, and contribute where you can.

I hope this apprenticeship will continue helping me explore those ideas more deeply. I want to better understand what it means to build a life grounded in discipline, practical skill, community, and care for the land. I am especially interested in the intersection of community, agriculture, and human wellness, and I believe immersive, hands-on experiences are essential for becoming the kind of steward and person I hope to be. Beyond technical skills, I hope this apprenticeship challenges me personally by teaching resilience, humility, adaptability, and how to live and work in closer relationship with both people and place.

Ultimately, I hope this experience helps me grow into someone capable of creating meaningful change in the communities and landscapes I am part of, however big or small that impact may be.
