Fire Recovery Work Day with Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance

October 1, 2022 @ 7:30 am - 3:00 pm

Are you longing for a Quivira work weekend? Missing moving some rocks and getting your hands dirty with other land lovers?

Registration is now closed.

This event is a volunteer work day to support the Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance complete critical fire recovery erosion control work in the Gallinas Watershed.

This summer, New Mexico experienced two of the largest fires in its history. We also have experienced a steady monsoon season bringing both rain and significant post fire flooding and erosion. Hermit’s Peak Watershed was significantly impacted by both fire and rain. The watershed alliance, among many other groups, have been hard at work to mitigate the impacts of both. They are using a variety of erosion control techniques to mitigate immediate affects, as well as to build longer term resilience to future catastrophic events. We hope you’ll join us for a day of getting dirty and chipping in on this very important work. You might also learn a thing or two about post-fire erosion control, the fire itself and the challenges that land stewards face from compounding climate-related natural disasters, not to mention meeting others who care about making sure impacted communities recover from these events.

Participants are invited to camp on Friday night and to enjoy a potluck with fellow volunteers. Work will begin at 8am on Saturday morning and wrap at 3pm. Breakfast will be provided on Saturday morning, volunteers are asked to bring their lunch, snacks and water will be provided.

This volunteer work day will require lifting and moving rocks on uneven terrain. The work day will be in the field with very rudimentary facilities — likely a porta potty or tent toilet. The work day will also require team work. The day does not require prior experience doing erosion control work, but does require a capacity for a long day in the sun and getting dirty. Gloves and tools will be provided.
