Red Canyon Fall Gathering and Land Art Workshop

October 4 – 6 | Magdalena, NM

If you’ve been to Red Canyon Reserve, a 320-acres in the eastern foothills of the San Mateo Mountains, you know it’s a special place for early morning canyon walks, meals around the fire, and deepening your connection with all things land, flora, and fauna. If you haven’t experienced it, now is the time! Join us October 4-6 for a weekend of camping, volunteer ecological restoration work, and a land art workshop with multi-media artist, Karina Hashim-Faulstich.

Karina will guide us in a printmaking exercise using rusted fencing and found objects from the property. There will also be a plant ID walk led by stewards of Red Canyon. This event is for anyone interested in the flora, fauna, and history of land management and grazing at the Red Canyon Reserve, as well as those interested in learning how a land art practice can inform our experiences as land stewards.

Participants are welcome to come for all or part of the weekend activities. Most meals will be provided by Quivira, with the exception of our potluck dinner on October 4.

Friday, October 4

1 p.m.: Participants may begin to arrive to explore the property and set-up camp.

6 p.m.: Potluck dinner

Saturday, October 5

7:30 – 8:45 a.m.: Breakfast and coffee provided by Quivira

9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Red Canyon volunteer leaders will facilitate work around the property, including fence repair, tank cleaning, and more. Brown bag lunch provided by Quivira.

4 – 5:30 p.m.: Land art activity with Karina Hashim-Faulstich. Joining us from UNM’s department of art and ecology, Karina will guide us through an exercise of creating rust prints onto fiber (bandanas, table clothes, clothing, etc.*) from Red Canyon fencing and found objects from around the site. After spending the day learning about ecological revitalization, this workshop presents another opportunity to build a deeper relationship with our surroundings.

6 p.m.: Dinner provided by Quivira

Sunday, October 6

7:20 – 8:45 a.m.: Breakfast and coffee provided by Quivira

9 a.m.: Plant ID walk

1 p.m.: Head home

*Quivira will bring some fabric for the land art workshop, however, participants are welcome to bring light-colored cotton or wool fabric for the land art workshop as well.
