Red Canyon Spring Gathering

May 2 @ 9:00 am - May 4 @ 11:30 am

Want to get involved in restoring ecological health?

Friday, May 2-4 | Red Canyon Reserve

In early 2002, The Quivira Coalition received the gift of a beautiful 320-acre tract of land in the eastern foothills of the San Mateo Mountains, south of Socorro, New Mexico. Since then, with the leadership of volunteers, we’ve been working to restore ecological health to the land at Red Canyon Reserve. We invite you to be a part of this journey; we are seeking volunteer support to help maintain the property. And we’re offering a plant ID hike led by UNM’s Missy Bacigalupa on Saturday, where we’ll learn about the incredible biodiversity of this special place and how to improve our identification skills! Quivira will provide food on Friday night and Saturday morning, but please bring all other meals for yourself.

We’re offering a couple different ways to get involved at this spring gathering – come to some or all of it!

Volunteer Days (May 2-3): Red Canyon volunteer leaders will facilitate work around the property including fence repair, tank cleaning, and more. Red Canyon Reserve is a group project and we’d love your help! Work will take place between 9 and 5, with breaks for rest, meals and downtime.

Plant ID Hike (May 4): This half-day workshop will be led by UNM’s Missy Bacigalupa, where we’ll learn about the land’s biodiversity and hone our identification skills. Breakfast will be provided from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m., with the plant walk taking place 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Then we’ll pack up and head out.

*You’re welcome to hangout after the Plant ID Hike on Saturday afternoon. Quivira facilitators will head out by midday, but Red Canyon volunteers plan to stick around, and you can hike or check out the bullseye monitoring method. There’s no official facilitation or agenda at that point.
