Highwater Farm is seeking up to two Field Lead Positions to support all aspects of farm management. Positions are seasonal with a 6-month contract starting in April or May. Full or part-time work is available. One season of farming experience or equivalent outdoor exposure is recommended and a willingness to learn/ be involved in all areas of food production is required. Additionally required is the ability to lift 50+ lbs, work long hours in all types of weather conditions, and have a positive attitude and enthusiasm for sustainable food production.
The Field Lead reports directly to the Farm Manager to assist in all areas of crop production and help ensure the farm is operating efficiently. This position requires participation and leadership in all aspects of vegetable production and land management on 3 acres.
Responsibilities:
- Assist Farm Manager in leading vegetable production throughout the season (seeding; greenhouse management; cultivation and bed prep; transplanting; irrigation; weed and pest management; harvesting, washing, and marketing crops; and animal chores including feeding/watering chickens, and rotating chickens every week)
- Prepare for and manage on-farm CSA distribution and wholesale orders
- Manage volunteers on the farm and basic data collection
- Train and lead youth program participants in fieldwork and farm tasks
- Saturday and Sunday greenhouse/irrigation chores shared among staff on a rotating basis

Highwater Farm connects the community back to the land through sustainable agriculture, stewardship, and youth development. In 2025 our team grew over 30,000 pounds of diversified vegetables on 3 acres using regenerative practices. ABOUT THE POSITION
As a Ranch Technician, your primary duties will be centered around grazing and rangeland management, bison movement and processing, and infrastructure development and maintenance. You’ll assist in managing bison herds using adaptive grazing practices across the Ranch. The ability and skills to use ATVs/UTVs to perform ranch work, including moving bison, is required.
You will also be responsible for:
- Operating and maintaining equipment, including farm machinery and construction equipment.
- Utilizing technology, including temporary fencing in a range environment.
- Assisting in the preparation of pastures (fences, water systems, forage inventory) ahead of the grazing rotation and ranch-wide as needed.
- Moving/Handling bison in the pasture and corrals using low stress techniques on foot, ATV or UTV.

- Developing and maintaining fences, water sources, corrals, ranch buildings, and other ranch infrastructure.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Water Well / Bison Technician is a dual faceted position where time is split between working with the Bison Department and the Natural Resources Department on Vermejo Park Ranch. The position is vital to both the bison and the wildlife on the ranch. About half of your time will be spent checking, testing, repairing, and developing water systems such as windmills, solar wells, wildlife (rain catchment) guzzlers, storage systems, and tanks from pipelines. The other half of your time will be spent working with the Castle Rock bison herd as part of the ranch’s Bison Department. This will include open range and pasture moves, Bison Works (sorting, vaccinating, shipping, etc.), checking on bison, and feeding while bison are in the corrals. Turner Enterprises and Vermejo Park Ranch embrace low stress stockmanship when handling bison, and any applicant for the position must be well versed in modern low-stress livestock handling methods or be willing to attend courses (company provided) on the subject. You must be able to work alone for extended periods of time in remote areas. You will also be responsible for:
Water Resource Duties
- Managing and responding to written and verbal work orders from management.
- Maintaining and monitoring inventory; ordering supplies and parts for water systems as needed.
- Scheduling routine service and repairing of wind and solar wells.
- Maintaining written and/or digital records of repairs performed and parts used.
- Assisting in the design, development and execution of water systems & distribution projects that support both wildlife and livestock, ensuring efficient and sustainable use of water resources.
- Troubleshooting and repairing pumps, pipelines, water troughs, and other irrigation infrastructure.
- Ensuring all equipment related to water systems and bison management is in good working order and complies with safety standards.
- Pump testing wells for water production prior to installing solar equipment.
- Handling fence construction and installation around water infrastructure.
- Safely operating, inspecting and maintaining a variety of ranch equipment, including ATVs, UTVs, vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIeS

Regenerative Ranch Management

Coverdale Farm Preserve features four key enterprises: four-season vegetable production, livestock/poultry husbandry and production, on-farm market, and farm-based education/engagement. The Farm Apprentice is an interdisciplinary, seasonal position involved in each of the four enterprises with a focus on vegetable production and livestock/poultry husbandry and production. The Farm Apprentice program provides comprehensive training/experience to prepare one for service to community through regenerative agriculture. The Farm Apprentice is an integral member of the Farm Team working in coordination with the Site Director/Farm Manager, Vegetable Production Manager, Vegetable Production Assistant, Program Manager, Education & Preschool Coordinator, Education Assistant, Market Team, Seasonal Educators, Seasonal Livestock Team, and Volunteers in the implementation of all aspects of whole-farm operations. This position reports to: Program Manager
Responsibilities
- Assists Vegetable Production Team in all aspects of annual production plan implementation by completing daily and weekly work lists associated with vegetable production. Scope of this work will include but is not limited to seed propagation, soil maintenance, crop maintenance, planting/cultivation, irrigation management, pest/plant disease control, harvesting/washing/packing of produce, distribution, general upkeep of vegetable production spaces, on-site sales/customer engagement, etc.
- Assists Livestock/Poultry Production Team in all aspects of animal husbandry tasks and adaptive grazing management plan implementation by completing daily and weekly work tasks associated with livestock production. Scope of this work will include but is not limited to general care of chickens, turkeys, cows, goats, and sheep, movement of livestock structures/materials, veterinary appointments, general maintenance of all livestock facilities/pastures, feed management, egg processing/packaging, turkey harvest and distribution, etc.
- Supports and participates in farm-based community engagement activities such as weekend Pick-Your-Own project, education programs, farmer training workshops, farm tours, and special events.
- Supports and participates in weekend on-farm retail market activities including farm product set-up and clean-up, customer engagement, and Market Team education.
- Promotes & supports DelNature’s mission, values, goals, activities, and membership to a wide array of audiences.
- Performs other duties as requested by supervisor or leadership staff.
Qualifications and Experience

OSGF is now accepting applications for one full-time Equipment & Poultry Manager. The selected individual will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of all large and small engine machines used at the BCCF, as well as the roughly 200-layer hen flock that is rotationally grazed on pasture surrounding the BCCF Production Fields. This individual will also provide oversight for larger landscape needs within the BCCF’s footprint including invasive species management, mowing/weedeating and general landscape maintenance needs.
This role requires the candidate to be a highly-organized, self-motivated and a responsible person who is excited about small-scale organic farming, growing nourishing food for the local community and being a part of a larger, dynamic operating foundation that is dedicated to connecting people with plants.
The Equipment & Poultry Manager will be expected to also participate in all other general farm operations including bed preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, assisting in CSA pick-ups, and more. The team rotates weekend farm duties on a 6-9-week rotation depending on the time of year, as well as managing CSA pick-ups during the 24-week season from 2pm-5pm on Wednesdays, May-October. There are a few additional events including farm-to-table dinners, Open Days and a fall festival where participation is expected. All additional events where participation is expected are communicated at the beginning of the year so employees can plan accordingly.
Although the schedule can change from week-to-week, the weekly schedule typically models the following:

Wednesday AM – Team splits into smaller groups for various tasks

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate the BCCF’s 52HP manual tractor to complete a rang of farm-related tasks such as: flail mowing cover crop, tillage, mowing grassy pastures, laying plastic and drip irrigation, scooping and distributing compost and mulch in the farmscape, unloading/moving pallets, and more.
- Operate additional tractors that are used and maintained by OSGF’s Arboriculture, Conservation and Landscape team and ensure timely and professional coordination with them when the need arises.
- Maintain and/or, organize the maintenance of all BCCF equipment
- Operate and train seasonal farm crew on additional BCCF machinery including a BCS walk-behind tractor, weedeaters, leaf blowers, a riding lawnmower, and more.
- Manage the BCCF’s pastured layer flock of approximately 200 hens including moving the chicken coop on a daily to weekly basis, ensuring all chicken care tasks are completed and provide oversight on the general health and vigor of the flock.
- Train and oversee a rotating seasonal farm crew member on landscape responsibilities and pastured poultry care, including daily/weekend maintenance, egg washing, packing and more.
- Communicate regularly with the BCCF Farm Director to determine what tasks need to be prioritized weekly based on equipment, landscape and poultry needs.
- Work closely with the BCCF Farm Director to determine the annual operating budget for equipment/poultry/landscape operations.
- When not working on the responsibilities specified by this role, this individual will work with the rest of the farm team with all general farm operations including: planting, weeding, harvesting, bed preparation, laying compost and mulch, and more.
- Other tasks and projects assigned by the BCCF Farm Director
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2-5 years of experience working on a production farm, preferably one that utilizes organic practices.
- Experience working with heavy equipment and ideally with production-focused implements.
- Familiarity working with chickens or willingness to learn and run with it.
- Must be comfortable processing chickens for meat and culling chickens when health issues arise, being the most humane option.
- Demonstrated interest and passion for food and ecologically-focused farming.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of working outside in varied weather conditions (including extreme heat and cold) in a working farm setting.
- Excellent time-management, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Dependable and collaborative team player.
- Ability to do repetitive tasks for long periods of time (e. weeding, mulching, sowing).
- Ability to work quickly, efficiently and thoroughly in every assigned task.
- Ability to work independently and also as part of a team.
- Ability to exhibit safe and responsible conduct in outdoor environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position works mainly on the BCCF, although occasional work elsewhere on the OSGF property will convey. The Equipment & Poultry Manager must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, in extreme temperatures of Virginia’s ecological environment, and more.
Days can sometimes feel long, even though we keep to an 8-hour day, and the work can be strenuous. For the right individual this work is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling!
Starting salary is dependent on experience. Paid holidays, vacation and sick days are provided, as well as optional health/vision/dental insurance and a 403(b) package.
Schedule: Full-time, permanent position – Monday through Friday (40 hours a week), with some weekend and evening hours.

Regenerative Grazier/Herder – Full-Time Position (Immediate Start) Seeking an experienced grazier for a grain-free, Organic-Certified regenerative farm in northern Virginia. Manage 400+ acres of pasture and woodland (plus 200+ leased acres) for multi-species livestock: cattle, sheep, pastured pork, and poultry. Must hold a college degree or accredited grazing program certification; 2+ years in adaptive pasture management (grasses, legumes, forbs) and grain-free livestock nutrition strongly preferred. Goal: Optimization of Soil Health and productivity using livestock. Essential skills, or willingness to learn: low-stress livestock handling, vaccination/healthcare, trailering, machinery operation, and fence/infrastructure maintenance.
