Learn to build low-tech, high process erosion control structures at the upcoming 2026 Red Canyon Reserve Fall Gathering! We can’t wait to see you for a weekend of camping, meals around the fire, and volunteer restoration work.

If you’ve been to Red Canyon Reserve, 320-acres in the eastern foothills of the San Mateo Mountains, you know it’s a special place for early morning canyon walks, gathering with old and new friends, and deepening your connections with the great outdoors. Most of all, this reserve is a living laboratory for restoring land health and preserving Southwestern flora and fauna.

On Friday, arrive any time after 4 p.m. for exploring, setting up camp, and a potluck dinner. On Saturday morning, learn how to build Zeedyk rock structures – a rock structure that is a low-cost, high-impact conservation practice that increases the hydraulic and ecological sustainability of a dryland area. This volunteer work helps to keep Red Canyon Reserve a healthy habitat. For those looking for a slower-paced activity, there will also be an option to take a hike around the property to learn about how we are monitoring the invasive presence of Yellow Bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum). On Sunday, we’ll end with some time to reflect and take a hike through the beautiful red rock canyon.
