Gus Speth - Featured Speaker

Gus Speth is a Professor of Law at the Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vermont, and Distinguished Senior Fellow with Demos and with the United Nations Foundation, both in New York City. He was Professor in the Practice of Environmental Policy at Yale where he served as Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies from 1999 to 2009. From 1993 to 1999, Speth was Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chair of the UN Development Group. Prior to his service at the UN, he was founder and president of the World Resources Institute; professor of law at Georgetown University; chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality; and senior attorney and co-founder, Natural Resources Defense Council. Throughout his career, he has provided leadership and entrepreneurial initiatives to many task forces and committees whose roles have been to combat environmental degradation, including the President's Task Force on Global Resources and Environment; the Western Hemisphere Dialogue on Environment and Development; and the National Commission on the Environment.

His new book, America the Possible will be coming out right around the conference.

Dr. Miguel Altieri - Plants

Dr. Miguel Altieri has has been a Professor of Agroecology at UC Berkeley, CA since 1981 in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management Agroeco.org and Berkeley.

Dr. Altieri served as a Scientific Advisor to the Latin American Consortium on Agroecology and Development (CLADES) Chile an NGO network promoting agroecology as a strategy for small farm sustainable development in the region. He also served for 4 years as the General Coordinator for the United Nations Development Programme's Sustainable Agriculture Networking and Extension Programme which aimed at capacity building on agroecology among NGOs and the scaling-up of successful local sustainable agricultural initiatives in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Fred Provenza

Wednesday Workshop Speaker

Fred Provenza is originally from Colorado where he worked on a ranch near Salida while earning a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University. Upon receiving a B.S. degree in 1973 he became ranch manager. In total, he and his wife Sue spent 7 years working on the ranch.
He and Sue left the ranch in 1975 so he could work as a research assistant and technician at Utah State University, where he earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. He was a professor in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University from 1982 to 2009. He is currently Professor Emeritus, and he and his wife Sue are living once again in the mountains of Colorado.

Allan Savory - Livestock


Allan is a Zimbabwean biologist, farmer, soldier, exile, environmentalist and winner of the 2003 Banksia International Award and winner of the 2010 Buckminster Fuller Award. He is the originator of the Holistic Management concept. Savory and his wife divide their time between Zimbabwe and New Mexico.
